Upper Yarra Dam, Reefton

Way up in the high reaches of the Yarra River, the Upper Yarra Reservoir is the farthest point accessible to the public.Upper Yarra Dam, ReeftonBuilt in 1957, the dam is the third largest of Melbourne's water storage reservoir. It supplies water via underground pipes to Silvan Reservoir, which then distributes water throughout metropolitan Melbourne.

Just down the road is the picnic and camping ground - the perfect spot for  a picnic lunch and a walk along one of the trails. This was the original site of the small township where the dam construction workers lived.
Fern Gully was our chosen track on the day we visited. The path does an easy 1km circuit through the lush ferns and undergrowth, with towering gum trees providing a shady canopy above.
