We arrived at the Cape Schanck Lighthouse carpark just in time to join the tour group that was about to set off. Tickets were purchased from the Lighthouse Keeper himself, and we were sent us up the path and through the turnstile, onto the lighthouse grounds.
It was a cold, windy, wet and grey day in Winter - perfect for exploring a lighthouse and the rocky clifftops it stands guard over.
The waves crashed against the rocks below and we watched a couple of Australian Fur Seals bodysurfing in the swirling water.
The Lighthouse Keeper told us of the history of the 21m high limestone tower, and of the workings of the (mostly) original equipment.
The light itself was fascinating. Shutters are used to filter the light, creating a kind of unique morse code of light circles and stripes, for ships to see which lighthouse it is. The beam can travel about 48km. Wow!
The winding staircase had beautiful views from the windows, which lessened the closeness of the walls and made the walk up and down more enjoyable.
