Wirribi River Trail, Werribee Zoo

We usually stick to the Safari Tour and the more exotic animal exhibits when we visit Werribee Zoo, and rarely visit the Australian section of the Zoo.
We were pleasantly surprised when we stepped through the doors of the Australian Journey exhibit recently.

Just past the Koala enclosure, we came across this old bluestone Cottage...

...and saw for the first time, the huge bluestone sheep shearing shed that was once a part of the sprawling Werribee property owned by the Chirnside family, which included the entire Werribee Park precinct and was one of the largest sheep stations in Victoria.

A boardwalk led us through wetlands, good for spotting birdlife and platypus can sometimes be seen in this area.

A viewing platform offered views of the beautiful Werribee River, which runs right through the middle of the Zoo.

We came across 3 Swamp Wallabies along the track. The first was a female with a joey on board, the second a large wallaby and the third, a smaller, wetter version of the other two.
They were engaged in a game of chasey/tiggy, with the big one in the middle chasing the poor Mum and bub around and around, while the soggy one at the back followed them.
They bounced back and forth across the track for about 10 minutes, crashed through branches and jumped small fences surrounding vegetation, before disappearing into the scrub - possibly for a Nanna Nap after all that fun.
I was exhausted just watching them.
